The eyes are more than the windows to the soul. They are the focal point of our faces, the center of our social interactions, and the communicators of our emotions. Blepharoplasty – also known as eyelid surgery or an eye lift – corrects the signs of aging and premature drooping of the upper and lower eyelids for a youthful, open, and revitalized gaze.
More than 200,000 people in the United States undergo eyelid surgery annually, whether to address cosmetic concerns or improve vision. Below, we’ve answered the most commonly asked questions about blepharoplasty.
What is blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty is a plastic surgery procedure that delicately rejuvenates the signs of aging on the eyelids or improves vision. The eyelid skin is extremely thin, and great care must be taken to protect the eye itself. An individualized surgical approach is key to unlocking the full spectrum of benefits of this effective surgery.
What concerns can I address with blepharoplasty?
The eye area is one of the first to exhibit signs of aging. By lifting, smoothing, and tightening the lower and upper eyelids, blepharoplasty can help address the following concerns:
- Saggy and baggy eyelids
- Excess skin
- Crepey skin
- Hollowness
- Fat misplacement
Those with the above issues may feel like they look older and more tired than they actually are, or even perpetually sad.
What’s more, if your upper eyelid sags or is hooded, your field-of-view may be compromised. Eyelid surgery can make daily tasks like driving and reading more comfortable and safer.
What results can I expect from blepharoplasty?
Eye lifts offer near-instant gratification. Following eyelid surgery, expect a more open, more alert appearance that radiates youthfulness. If you opted for blepharoplasty to improve your vision, expect clearer peripheral vision and greater ease during day-to-day activities.
The results of blepharoplasty last, at a minimum, five to seven years . Upper eyelid surgery may need to be repeated or supplemented with a forehead lift. Lower eyelid surgery rarely needs to be redone.
Am I a suitable candidate for eyelid surgery?
The majority of blepharoplasty patients are 35 years or older Still, if you are experiencing premature signs of aging or if baggy or saggy eyelids run in your family, you may consider undergoing eyelid surgery sooner.

What can I expect from the blepharoplasty procedure?
It’s only natural to feel nervous before surgery, especially when it’s targeting somewhere as fragile as the eye region. Rest easy knowing that the eye lift procedure is fast, typically taking less than an hour, and relatively painless. Most patients require local anesthesia only; if you are particularly anxious, you can request general anesthesia.
During the procedure, your doctor will make a series of small, scar-free incisions that allow for tightening and fat redistribution. Following your surgery, your doctor will provide a series of medications and supplements that support a speedy recovery and minimize swelling and bruising.
How long does it take to recover from blepharoplasty?
Most blepharoplasty patients return to work and other normal activities within a few days to one week after their procedure. However, strenuous activities, such as high-impact exercise, are not permitted for at least two weeks. Your doctor will offer personalized recovery guidance and answer any questions you may have about specific tasks.
As for the swelling, bruising, and other visual side effects, these usually subside within two weeks. After this time, you can resume wearing contact lenses and eye makeup.
We recommend wearing dark sunglasses when outdoors or exposed to bright light during your recovery period.
Can men get blepharoplasty?
Yes. Blepharoplasty is suitable for men, women, and all other people. That being said, ensure your doctor understands the difference between the structures of male and female eyes, eyelids, and eyebrows. Patients who would like to maintain a masculine look should be sure their surgeon does not over-correct their eyelids. This can result in a rounding of the eye area, which appears conventionally feminine.
Youthful and rejuvenated eyes await
If you are looking to enhance your eye area’s appearance, blepharoplasty is a safe option that delivers almost instant results. You can expect smoother skin, less sagging, and a wakeful, alert appearance.
